How Do I Hang A Dart Board?

The dartboard needs to hang exactly 5 feet 8 inches from the floor to the center of the bull’s-eye. Most quality dartboards have a screw in the center. However, if you have a dartboard that hangs from the top, you will have to measure the distance to the center of the bull’s-eye and add that to the height.

WHY IS THE THROW LINE (OCHE) DISTANCE SOMETIMES DIFFERENT?

Q: This question doesn't have to do with technique, but comes from curiosity. Why is the "oche" sometimes a different distance from the dartboard for steel tip dartboards and soft tip dartboards?

A: The throw line distance has developed over the years. For a long time, the sport, which mainly comes from England, had no official governing body, so most pubs had their own distance. When the BDO (British Darts Organization) was founded, there was movement for unification of throwing distance. This led to the first standardized distance of 2.44 meters (8 feet).

Later, the BDO (in the early 1970s as far as I know) changed the distance to the now official 2.37 meters (7 feet 9 1/4 inches). Measure from the front of the dart board (not the wall). The distance from the floor to the dartboard bull's eye is 173 centimeters (5 feet 8 inches).

When the throw line was changed for steel tip tournament play, it wasn't always changed for soft tips. The first softtip dart machines were developed in the late 1960's when the offical throwing distance of the BDO was still 2.44 meters, and as the BDO changed it, the soft tip world decided not to change - I believe that's the story.

P.S.: The “oche” is the toe line (or the line you stand behind) when you throw your darts, and it’s pronounced “ockey” --you know, like “ockey-dokey."
